In keeping with the ethos of Coláiste Cholmáin the strong and vibrant Irish Department reflects the growth and popularity of The Irish Language and Culture nationwide.

Irish is taught at all levels throughout St. Colman's with a number of our students performing very well in CEA examinations.

Irish is not just confined to the Seomra Ranga! There are a wide variety of extra-curricular activities organized throughout the year - Gael-Linn Quizzes, Public speaking, Seachtain na Gaeilge, weekend and Summer Gaeltacht, Cumann Gaelach etc

The programme of study for modern languages forms the basis of the curriculum for Year 8 to 10. A variety of topics are covered such as Myself and my family, Daily routine, Home and environment and Holidays.

The emphasis is very much on the target language in class. A wide variety of worksheets are employed for class and homework.

Pupils are assessed at the end of each topic and this can take the form of a listening, reading comprehension or writing task. We now employ Oral presentations in Year 10 for certain topic based assessment in preparation for

G.C.S.E. Examination Structure All students are given a continuous assessment mark (20%) at Christmas ans Summer based on topic based assessment.

They have an oral 20% a listening paper 20 % and a reading and writing paper 40%. Practical work Oral and oral presentations (Year 10).

Every student will have the opportunity to do a range of activities through I.C.T. in years 8 to 10. We organize internet quizzes in the junior school as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge. A large number of our students attend Summer Colleges in the Gaeltacht.

G.C.S.E. Irish is based on the four contexts for learning and is a more in depth study of the topics covered in KS 3. Examination Structure Students are assessed in the four skill areas Speaking,Listening, Reading and Writing at foundation and higher level.

Questioning is exclusively through the medium of Irish. 2003 saw the introduction of an two minute oral presentation in which each student talks about a subject relevant to the course and based on Irish Society.

Practical / Coursework

There is no coursework as such. The oral presentation is the nearest thing to coursework in G.C.S.E. Irish.

The A level Curriculum In Irish this is a two year course Examination Structure Three modules can be taken at the end of the first year AS. AS is worth 50% of the overall A2 mark.

These may be repeated in the second year with a view to improving the overall mark. Module 1 or A01 is an oral exam which includes a presentation, roleplays and a conversation.

A02 has three parts. Listening, language manipulation and translation from Irish to English.

A03 is a literature and society paper. Pupils can choose to study literature or aspects of Irish Society (e.g. G.A.A) The A2 modules are made up as follows. Module 1 or A04 is an oral exam with a presentation, conversation and also includes talking about a picture stimulus.

A05 is a written paper with a listening element, comprehension and translation from English to Irish. A06 is a Literature and society paper. We choose to study a novel and poetry.

All students of Irish at violet Hill have the opportunity to take part in various extra-curricular activities. Around 100 boys attend Gaeltacht courses each year in Dún Lúiche, Loch an Iúir, Machaire Rabhartaigh agus Rann na Feirste. We also organize weekend trips to Teach Chambpell Gaoth Dobhair each Winter for S3 and S4. Year 10 and Year 12 students take part in Gael-Linn quizzes every year. Year 12,13 and 14 students have the opportunity to enter the prestigious Gael-Linn Public speaking competition ?Abair?. We also organize poster and internet competitions,A fáinne presentation, quizzes and lectures. The highlight of the year is the Irish Mass which is central to our St. Patrick?s Day and Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations. Every year a large number of our students take part and are successful in Feis An Dúin and Feis Fhoirchealla where valuable Gaeltacht scholarships are on offer. An Cumann Gaelach has been reluanched this year 2003.
