KS3 / GCSE The department follows the CCEA KS3 and GCSE English Programmes of Study. The students sit the CCEA KS3 English Test at the end of Year 10. Although every method is used to prepare each student for this examination the department’s aim is to allow all students to experience a wide range of text and genre throughout their first three years in the school and to acquire the skills that make them effective in the three core areas of Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing.
At GCSE these same skills are examined in a formal manner. Talking and Listening accounts for 20% of the total exam mark while Reading and Writing Coursework accounts for another 20%. The exam itself consists of two papers, each two hours long. The first of these will examine Comprehension and Personal Writing skills while the second examines Response to Non-Fiction Texts and Discursive Writing. GCSE English Literature is an option for interested students who are capable of pursuing this course. The AQA Examination Board is the preferred course since it affords opportunities for crossover assignment work with CCEA English Language.
At the moment the department follows the OCR Examination Board Specification for both AS and A2 Level English Literature. At AS the course consists of three units: Unit One - the study of a Shakespeare play Unit Two - the study of pre19th Century Poetry and post 19th Century Prose Unit Three - Coursework – 2,000 words on a text of the student’s choice At A2 a further three units are covered: Unit Four - the study of pre-19th Century Poetry and Drama Unit Five - Coursework - the study of a post 19th Century prose text of the student’s choice Unit six - Synoptic Paper on a theme chosen in consultation between teacher and class. A number of students choose AS/A2 Drama and Theatre Studies with the Edexcel Examination Board. This is a largely practical course with units in Acting, Lighting and Sound Design and Directing Skills. Students greatly enjoy the ‘hands-on’ approach and the opportunity to take responsibility for their own progress and eventual result.
The department has a long tradition of involvement in a range of extra-curricular activity. This includes Debating – most of the successful EYP teams of recent years have had a high percentage of AS English Literature students involved – and taking an active role in the bi-annual College musical. A number of theatre visits are arranged throughout the year and the school is an active member of The Lyric Theatre Affiliate Members Scheme. The department also enters students in a number of competitions, written and oral throughout the year. Recent visits to the school have been made by ‘Big Telly Theatre Workshop’ and by ‘The Lyric Outreach Programme’ to facilitate workshops on Shakespeare and other modern dramatists. Achievements / Career Opportunities Many of our A’ Level students continue their study of Drama and/or English Literature at University. In the past few years a number have gone to prestigious Acting Colleges in London such as Central School for Dramatic Arts and others have pursued a diverse range of courses closer to home including Law and Journalism. Resources At KS3 the core text is ‘Literacy through Texts’ Books 1, 2 and3. This is supplemented by a wide range of further reading materials including class novels and play scripts and a library class. At GCSE the core text is ‘CCEA – English for GCSE’. This is supplemented by a range of literary texts including Shakespeare and Poetry Anthologies. At A’ Level a wide range of literary texts is studied. The department is also developing a DVD/Video library to enhance resources.
