Dept. Of History and Government & Politics not to be missed on Open Day
The Department will have three rooms available for prospective students and parents to view on Open Day, F7, F8 and F9 with two members of the Department available to answer any questions that students and parent may have. We also plan to have both junior and senior students available in the department to engage with the younger primary school pupils and also potentially students coming from other secondary schools who may wish to discuss AS and A2 Level subjects.
The Department delivers two separate subjects, History through all of the Key Stages from J1 to S4 and Government & Politics which at the moment is available in S3 and S4 at AS and A2 level. The Department has performed very strongly over the years in public examinations in both subject areas and recently, one of our students attained the top grade in A2 Government & Politics in Northern Ireland.
Examination results are undoubtedly very important and act as a measure of our success but as with all departments in St. Colman’s we are concerned with the holistic development of our students. To this end we provide a range of extra-curricular activities including the Debating Society initiated and run by Mrs Quinn, a number of Government and Politics Forums have been run by the department and in 2016 a group of senior students (S2, S3 & S4) travelled to Berlin on a four-day History Tour. Aside from this members of the department are actively involved in providing extra-curricular sporting opportunities for the boys and in these areas we have achieved great successes also.
F7, Mrs McCartney/Miss Archer’s room will include a range of displays relevant to the junior school including Castles and examples of medieval weaponry. There will also be video presentations on various areas of the Key Stage Three curriculum. Mrs Quinn’s room, F8, will include examples of student work across the Key Stages with displays on Government and Politics. Finally, F9, Mr McEvoy’s room will have examples of work from various levels across the Key Stages and the variety of texts used as well as an interactive quiz.
