All students study English from J1 to S2.
The CCEA GCSE Specification is followed and assessed at GCSE level in Language with the option of also studying Literature.
At A Level English Literature is offered. At present the CCEA Specification is taken with assessment at AS and A2 Levels.
Students study a wide ion of prose, poetry and drama texts throughout J1- J3. They learn how to write in various forms and styles.
Literacy is promoted across the department through a literacy and reading week.
Access to the School Library is offered for one lesson every two weeks. The students read a selection of genres. An annual Book Fair also takes place.
The department has a very active extra-curricular dimension which includes involvement with The European Youth Parliament, Creative Writing competitions, School Debating competitions and Theatre Visits.
Many of our students take part in school productions and in local youth theatre groups. A number have gone on to professional careers in theatre and return to share their experience and expertise with current students. Past students who follow careers in writing, journalism and the arts are also regular visitors.
