Aim or Overview of Subject

 

The study of Geography helps students to understand and apply the following concepts:

• sustainable development;

• interrelationships between people and the natural environment;

• the need to manage both physical and human resources;

• interdependence between countries; and

• international cooperation to tackle global issues.

 

Assessment

There are eight geographical themes, set out as key geographical terms, content and

learning outcomes.                   Unit 1 40%      Unit 2 40%     Unit 3 20% = 100%

 

Year 11/12 Units

The assessment of Unit 1/2/3 will be available in summer of Year 12.

Assessment of Unit 1 is available in the Summer of Year 11.

 

Unit 1: Understanding Our Natural World

 

This unit covers the following themes:

Theme A: River Environments

Theme B: Coastal Environments

Theme C: Our Changing Weather and Climate

Theme D: The Restless Earth

External written exam - 1 hour 30 minutes - 40%

 

Unit 2: Living in Our World

 

This unit covers the following themes:

Theme A: People and Migration

Theme B: Changing Urban Areas

Theme C: Contrasts in World Development

Theme D: Managing Our Environment

External written exam - 1 hour 30 minutes - 40%

 

Unit 3: Fieldwork/Practical Requirements

 

Assessment is outlined in the form an external examination based on a geographical investigation

supported by a day of fieldwork. Students base their answers on their knowledge and experience of fieldwork. Students must bring a fieldwork statement and table of data into the examination.

 

External written examination - 1 hour - 20%
