All students study English from J1 to S2.
The CCEA Specification is followed and assessed at GCSE level in both compulsory Language and Literature.
At A Level English Literature is offered. At present the CCEA Specification is taken with assessment at AS and A2 Levels.
Students study a wide selection of prose, poetry and drama texts throughout J1- J3. They learn how to write in various forms and styles.
Literacy is promoted across the department through a literacy and reading week.
The students read a selection of genres throughout KS3. They are encourages to regularly visit the Library and an annual Book Fair also takes place.
Year 11 – Modules
Unit 1: The Study of Prose
Unit 3: The Study of Shakespeare (Controlled Assessment)
Unit 1: End of Year Examination (30%)
Year 12 – Modules
Unit 2: The Study of Poetry and Drama
Unit 2: End of Year Examination (50%)
At least 40% of the assessment must be taken at the end of the course as terminal assessment.
The department has a very active extra-curricular dimension which includes involvement with The European Youth Parliament, Creative Writing competitions, School Debating competitions and Theatre Visits.
