In keeping with the ethos of Colaiste Cholmain the Irish Department is strong and vibrant reflecting the increasing popularity of our language and culture nationwide. All our students have the opportunity to learn Irish from first to third year after which they can choose to study the language as a GCSE subject in fourth and fifth year, at AS Level in sixth year and at A2 Level in seventh year. At present there are 150 students in the GCSE classes with a further 22 students in AS/A2 classes.

Extra-Curricular

Achievements, clubs, trips, etc., etc.

An Ghaeltacht

Every boy has the opportunity to attend Summer or Easter courses in the Donegal Gaeltacht. Over 100 boys attended courses in the Gaeltacht last Summer. Cursa Gaeltachta afford the boys a fantastic opportunity to learn our language in beautiful relaxed surroundings while at the same they enjoy themselves and meet many new friends. AS and A2 students regularly attend intensive Easter courses in the Gaeltacht and we find these are of great benefit to our students.

Extra-Curricular

These include Gael-Linn quizzes, Abair public speaking, lectures, trips, Feis an Duin, poster/essay competitions, Sciath Mhic Giolla Bridghe/Ashbourne Shield (Winners a record 13 times), Seachtain na Gaeilge agus Bronnadh Fionn.

Beyond St. Colman's

Every year a number of our students continue their Irish Language studies at universities in Ireland and further afield. Quite a few have found employment in Irish Language related jobs.
