On Sunday March 24, senior students from the choir of St Colman's College will sing Evening Prayer of the Church for Palm Sunday in the Cathedral of Ss Patrick & Colman, Newry. The service at 7.00pm will last approximately 35 minutes and all are welcome. Holy Week begins on this Sunday and since 1993, choir has played an active role in Lenten liturgies at the Cathedral.

Ronan Dawe Performs for EU Education Minister

The College community would like to extend a hearty congratulations to S1 pupil Ronan Dawe who recently performed at Trinity College Dublin as part of Comhaltas Dún Dealgan. The reception was hosted for the EU Education Minister Androulla Vassiliou. The young flutist is an integral part of the Comhaltas group who meet every Tuesday for practice and he has been playing the wind instrument since the age of 5. He also plays the tin whistle. We wish him well in his future endeavours.

Sixth Year student, Gavin Fleming, last year entered the Baillie Gifford Financial Mail Essay Competition. This week, Gavin was pleased to inform us that he had been awarded second place by the Daily Mail (which organised the contest). The UK-wide competition asked entrants to write an essay on “When do you want to retire and how do you plan to fund this?” Entrants were encouraged to engage in economic and financial theory within their essay, and with this in mind, Gavin put up solid support for

Mark Mc Evoy (Dromara) and Niall Murphy (Mullaghbawn) attended the National Science and Engineering Competition 'The Big Bang' held in the ExCel Arena Docklands London 14th - 17th March. We received word from our skiiers that all is going well on the slopes in the French Alps and everyone is beginning to get to grips with the downhall skill! On Monday March 4th the S4 History students attended the Somme Heritage Centre in Newtownards for the A-Level History Conference. 15 pupils from Year 9 entered the Drama Section of Warrenpoint Feis. The College pupils were the youngest in the competition, with the rest of the actors being GCSE and A-Level students. This didn’t hinder their fantastic performance of Shakespeare’s Classic ‘Macbeth’.

On Tuesday 12th March, the Home Economics Department was host to a live cookery demonstration from The Livestock and Meat Commission (LMC). Mrs Bridghe Reilly spoke to the boys about the versatility and nutritional value of red meat and the importance of its inclusion in our diet. She then talked about the traceability of beef and lamb through the NI Quality Assurance Scheme and how we can support local producers by buying Quality Assured meat products.

Whole College Sponsored Walk a success

Violet Hill's now annual whole school Sponsored Walk took place today and it was a lovely occasion all round. Despite the brief threat of rain the day passed off without any soggy blazers. College Chaplain Canon Hackett presided over the Mass and as usual did a brilliant job in motivating the young people of Coláiste Cholmáin. Trócaire has always been a charity close to the hearts of College pupils and staff and this year a special drive is being made to surpass the £8000 mark for children
